Week 8 9 – A6 – Mapping tools and activities to pedagogy

Individual–social: any learning activity can be located somewhere along a spectrum from being an individual, isolated experience to being essentially social in nature.
Active–passive: some learning activities involve active engagement, whereas other aspects of learning may occur through some degree of passive immersion.
Information–experience: learning activities vary in the degree to which they are information or experience based.

Try to indicate the location of the following ‘tools in use’ on the three dimensions (or continua) of the framework in Figure 2:

  • A blog as a reflective diary

Individual, can be between active and passive, experience based.

Information(0) – Experience (10)   = 9
Passive (0) – Active (10)              = 5
Individual (0) – Social (10)             = 1

  • A blog as a collective resource for collating references within a student group

Social, can be between active and passive, information.

Information(0) – Experience (10)   = 1
Passive (0) – Active (10)              = 5
Individual (0) – Social (10)             = 10

  • A web search; i.e. students search the web and collate resources against a given set of criteria

social, passive, can be between information andexperience based.

Information(0) – Experience (10)   = 9
Passive (0) – Active (10)              = 2
Individual (0) – Social (10)             = 10

  • A drill and practice exercise; i.e. students work through a set of resources and then complete a formative self-assessment

Individual, passive, can be between information andexperience based.

Information(0) – Experience (10)   = 5
Passive (0) – Active (10)              = 1
Individual (0) – Social (10)             = 0

  • A structured online debate; i.e. students choose a side for or against an issue, post their views and read other postings

Social, active, can be between information and experience based.

Information(0) – Experience (10)   = 5
Passive (0) – Active (10)              = 10
Individual (0) – Social (10)             = 10

  • Use of an eportfolio; i.e. students gather evidence against learning outcomes in a portfolio

not sure what an eportfolio is.  From what I learned after a bit of googling; Eportfolio is social (evidence can be accessed by anyone online), passive, experience

Information(0) – Experience (10)   = 9
Passive (0) – Active (10)              = 1
Individual (0) – Social (10)             = 10

I liked very much Emma’s approach of triangulation. My approach was similar although not exactly the same. In turn, I looked at each of the three dimensions and gave a ‘mark’ between 0 and 10 to the tool being investigated. Maybe this might seem like simplifying too much the mapping framework;

For example; A blog as a reflective diary;
